If you ever played a sport in school,went for a jog,or played pick up basketball you most likely did some specific stretches to your legs,shoulders, hips or forearms.  For years, static stretching has been the technique of choice for pre-activity  to prevent injuries and protect the joints.

   However the latest research has shown this type of stretching may actually cause injury because the    muscles dont really loosen up and  stretching may be weakening the muscles. 

 

Dynamic stretching ,such as jogging in place,doing jumping jacks, or shadow boxing will increase your core temperature.  This warms muscles up and prepares it for activity.  Static stretching can decrease core temperature and put your body in a relaxed state, not priming it for activity

So the next time you get ready to jog,shovel snow or play softball, do some dynamic stretches and get a better result in preventing injury
